Scaffolding Safety: What You Need to Know

Scaffolding may seem safer than ladders for reaching high windows, but it carries its own set of dangers. Without proper scaffolding training, attempting to work on it is not recommended.

1. Danger of Falling

Falling from scaffolding is just as easy as falling from a ladder. While scaffolding may seem stable, inexperienced users face a significant risk. All window washers and construction workers undergo special training before climbing scaffolding. Even so, falls during the construction or assembly stage can happen.

2. Risk of Collapse

Assembling scaffolding is complex. If not done correctly, a single loose bolt can make the structure unsafe. Always inspect scaffolding for loose parts, unbalanced boards, or improper assembly before use. A collapse can injure not only the worker but also people on the ground. Hiring professionals for installation is strongly recommended.

3. Improper Protection

Anyone climbing scaffolding must wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE). Safety gear may be heavy but is essential for protection during accidents. Professional window cleaners always carry a full set of PPE.

4. Weather Hazards

Scaffolding is vulnerable to weather. Strong winds or heavy rain can cause it to shake or collapse. Avoid using scaffolding if bad weather is expected, as being stranded on top during a sudden storm is highly dangerous.

5. Electrocution Risk

Scaffold users often work near power lines, putting them at risk of electrocution. Scaffolds must be installed at a safe distance from electrical lines. Always verify installation guidelines are followed to minimize risk.
